Metal Interference Problem
Metal objects can severely disrupt a compass. Keeping it near a metal zipper pocket, metal-framed backpack, carabiners, or watches is a mistake. Even small keys can make the magnetic needle deviate, leading to wrong direction readings due to the magnetic fields they create.
Electronic Device Interference
Modern electronics like mobile phones, tablets, and GPS units also interfere. Their operating electronic components generate magnetic fields. To avoid this, keep such devices at least half a meter from the compass as their presence can affect its accuracy.
Incorrect Handholding
When held in hand, if not horizontal, the compass gets inaccurate. Tilting it makes the magnetic needle lean, especially in rough terrains or while moving. The right way is to place it flat on the palm, watching the level bubble to ensure it's centered for proper readings.
Uneven Surface Placement
Placing the compass on a sloping rock or bumpy ground is wrong. It makes the compass non-horizontal, stopping the magnetic needle from working right. Always find a flat spot or use aids to keep it level for correct direction determination.
