Common types
Turf soccer balls are made to withstand more wear and tear from artificial fields that tend to have a rougher playing surface.
Indoor soccer balls are most often size 5, but are made to have less rebound to accommodate the harder surfaces and turf that covers the playing ground and walls of an indoor soccer field.
Beach soccer balls are size 5, but are lighter than an official grass soccer ball, and typically softer to provide more comfort to bare feet. They are usually brightly colored to make them easier to see on the sandy beach terrain, and often are made water resistant in case they are kicked into the ocean.
Futsal soccer balls are size 4 but usually weigh about the same as a size 5 ball. They are typically made with less bounce since the game is played on a hard surface indoors, and sometimes have felt or suede casings to help stabilize the ball on the slippery playing floor.
Material of Soccer Ball
Polyurethane is a synthesized material which can be tailored to a range of different needs. In the case of footballs, it is considered the best material for match or high-quality balls. When manufactured, it can be made in different qualities, thicknesses and styles which affect the ball’s performance. This also means that you need to be careful when trying to compare grades of balls - as not all materials are created equally.
Thermoplastic Polyurethane is another synthesized material and sometimes considered a step down from PU materials. This is not always the case as TPU can come in a range of qualities and benefits of its own. The material has good strength and flexibility similar to rubber/plastic while having impressive UV resistance. The nature of the material lends itself to abrasion resistance and robustness, making it a great option for training. It does have more stretch than PU, so needs to be used with quality backing and/or wound bladder to stop premature deformation.
Polyvinyl Chloride is a plastic material and the cheapest option for any football worth considering (there are cheaper products out there). Like any ball, PVC footballs can come in a very wide range of qualities and performance. Because of this, there can be vast ranges in price and playability of the balls. At their cheapest (think supermarket balls), they are considered a toy and not suitable for anyone looking to train or play matches. But if used correctly with the right lining, bladder and stitching, PVC balls can be perfectly suitable for juniors and standard players.
Manufacturing Process
Designing and Cutting
The first step in making a soccer ball is designing and cutting the panels. Precision cutting ensures that each panel will fit perfectly with the others, maintaining the integrity of the ball’s shape. The designs on the panels, including logos and graphics, are printed during this stage using high-quality inks that withstand wear and weather conditions.
Stitching or Bonding
Once the panels are prepared, they are stitched or thermally bonded together. Traditional stitching is done with polyester or Kevlar threads, known for their strength and durability. Thermally bonded balls, where panels are glued together and then heated to form a seamless surface, are often used in professional-level balls. This method reduces water absorption and provides a more consistent feel.
Bladder Insertion and Inflation
After the outer panels are assembled, the bladder is inserted. The bladder is inflated to ensure it fits snugly within the outer casing, providing the ball with its shape and bounce. This step is crucial as it ensures the ball maintains its roundness and responsiveness during play.
Quality Testing
Each ball undergoes rigorous quality testing to ensure it meets specific standards for weight, size, shape, and performance. Tests include checking the ball’s circumference, sphericity, rebound, and water absorption. Only balls that pass these stringent tests are approved for use.
